UK government disregards preventing genocide in Gaza, Amnesty says

Amnesty International has claimed that the UK government’s “disregard for its legal obligations” in stopping genocide had enabled Israel to continue its war and face no accountability, The New Arab reported on January 27th.

Based in the UK, the rights watchdog called on Keir Starmer’s government to “take urgent and meaningful steps” to stop Israel’s “genocidal” acts towards Palestinians in Gaza as commitment to the Genocide Convention as a State Party.

Sacha Deshmukh, Amnesty International UK’s chief executive, said in a statement: “The genocide against the Palestinian people is a matter of law and evidence, not opinion.”

Deshmukh also said: “Prime Minister Keir Starmer must accept the UK’s obligations to prevent Israel’s genocide against Palestinians in Gaza and help ensure there is justice and accountability,”
