Thousands of people rallied in the junta-led Sahel states of Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali on January 28th in support of their withdrawal from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc, due to take effect on January 29th, reported RFI.

ECOWAS faces an uncertain future with the pending departure of these three founding members. The three states have formed a separate grouping called the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

They formally notified ECOWAS of their intention to make an “immediate” withdrawal from the bloc last January, alleging that the organisation is excessively dependent on France in particular.
