The de facto leader of Syria, Ahmed al-Sharaa was declared president for a transitional period on January 29th, in under two months after he led a campaign which ousted Bashar al-Assad, The Arab Weekly via Reuters reported.

Sharaa said the top priority in Syria is to fill the gap in the government “in a legitimate and legal way.” Sharaa also said civil peace must be maintained through the means of transitional justice and by stopping acts of retaliation.

Sharaa has promised to undertake a political transition which includes a national conference, an inclusive government and eventually, elections.
