The speaker of the Algerian parliament has redoubled calls for a law criminalising French colonialism as relations remain frayed between the two Mediterranean neighbours.

According to Anadolu Agency, on January 30th speaker Ibrahim Boughali condemned “repeated French attacks”aimed at “tarnishing Algeria’s image” and urged the Algerian parliament to put the draft law criminalizing colonialism forward for approval.

The draft bill, which requires amendments before formal presentation, was first introduced in 2006 after France passed a law in 2005 on “the positive aspects of colonialism”, according to Boughali.
