A Libyan activist based in Sweden was told by WhatsApp that he had been targeted with military-level spyware that they believe originates from Israel, The Guardian reported on February 3rd.
The alleged breach of Husam El Gomati’s mobile was discovered by WhatsApp late last December, along with discoveries of similar breaches on the mobile phones of 89 other activists, journalists and members of civil society.
The app said it wasn’t clear how long El Gomati and other mobile phones were “possibly compromised,” and added it believed the spyware was created by Paragon Solutions, an company based in Israel that was recently taken over by a US private equity company.
