Eastern Libya has imposed sweeping restrictions on rap music, claiming it might encourage children into prostitution or suicide.

According to Middle East Eye on February 3rd, the interior minister said the “the spread of rap songs, some of which contain obscene words, that violate the moral values of the Libyan Muslim society”, adding that they might “incite [children] under the age of eighteen to prostitution or encourage them to do so, or encourage the idea of suicide, or rebel against the family and society”.

Artists in Eastern Libya will now have to ask permission from the culture minister and other authorities before performing or sharing rap songs online.
