Morocco and Mauritania have signed an agreement to connect their electricity networks through the contested region of Western Sahara, a project which has been slammed by the indigenous Sahrawi people’s military and political representative, the Polisario Front.

Middle East Monitor reported the accords were signed on February 4th, with Moroccan officials calling it a “major step” towards more reliable electricity grids in both countries.

Only a day prior, on February 3rd, the pro-Polisario news site spsrasd.info said it attacked Moroccan bases in Al Mahbes in northern Western Sahara, asserting its operation caused “heavy losses in lives and equipment.”
