Ten endangered flamingos have been rescued as smugglers attempted to traffic them out of Tunisia.

According to the BBC on 10 February, the birds were saved at the Algerian border, being found bound up and stuffed into small crates.

In Tunisia it is illegal to hunt or smuggle flamingos, with the species struggling against pollution and rising temperatures causing their habitats to shrink.
