The new Syrian President Al-Sharaa has rejected Algerian appeals to release Algerian soldiers and Polisario men from his jails.

According to Atalayar on 12 February, the Algerian Foreign minister Ahmed Attaf requested during his trip to Syria that the prisoners be freed, with Al-Sharaa replying that “the 500 Algerian militia soldiers and those of the Polisario will be tried like the soldiers of the Assad regime”.

During the Syrian lightning offensive, Algeria was supportive of Assad’s fight against what they called “terrorist threats” , as reported by Middle East Monitor, backing Syria’s request for an emergency UN Security Council meeting.
