Poverty now affects nearly a third of Libyans, while official statistics suggest the country is doubling its oil revenues.

According to Arab Weekly on 12 February, Abdul Hamid al-Fadhil, a professor of economics at Misrata University, showed poverty in Libya now affects 32.5 percent of the population.

Fadhil said, “At the urban level, Tripoli recorded the largest percentage of families below the poverty line, at 11.3 percent, while families headed by individuals in the 45-55 age group are the poorest, at 12.6 percent, compared to other age groups.”
