African Union summit opens amid raging conflicts

The 38th African Union Summit, which runs for two days, begun on 15th February, reported RFI. The summit will see the election of a new African Union chairman at a time of heightened uncertainty and continental conflict.
The three candidates for the role are are 59-year-old career diplomat and former foreign minister of Djibouti Mahamoud Ali Youssouf, 80-year-old veteran Kenyan opposition politician Raila Odinga, and 55-year old former economy and finance minister of Madagascar, Richard Randriamandrato.
The new chairman will take over from Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat, who has reached the limit of two-terms.
