Fossil of ancient mammal discovered in Egypt
A “fearsome” carnivorous species that existed 30 million years ago has been discovered by scientists after they found a skull in an Egyptian desert, The National reported on February 17th.
Known as “Bastetodon,” the “leopard-sized” mammal reportedly existed together with hippos and early elephants in what was previously a forest in Fayoum in Egypt known for its lush nature.
The mammal had strong jaw muscles and sharp teeth which means it would have been at the the top of the food chain. An almost whole skull was uncovered in what is currently a part of the desert noted for its artefacts and fossils from the ancient Egyptian period.
