Algeria affirms solidarity with Lebanon over Israeli ceasefire

On February 16th, Algeria reaffirmed their solidarity with Lebanon, responding to the continual blatant violations of the ceasefire with Israel.
According to Middle East Monitor, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a press conference that Minister of State, Ahmed Attaf, had received a phone call from Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam.
Attaf and Salam discussed the developments in southern Lebanon, especially regarding the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and the need for Israel to withdraw their forces from Lebanon.
The Algerian minister affirmed his country’s commitment to continue to stand with Lebanon, as well as strengthening their role as a supporter, particularly from Algeria’s position as president of the United Nations Security Council.
Israel was expected to complete the withdrawal of its armed forced from the areas it had occupied in southern Lebanon by January 26th, in accordance with the 60-day deadline stipulated in the ceasefire agreement between Beirut and Tel Aviv, which was agreed on November 27th, 2024.
However, Israel failed to meet this deadline, with Washington later announcing that the withdrawal period will be extended until February 18th.
Despite the delayed deadline coming up once again, the Israel again announced on February 12th that it will be “extending the implementation period of the agreement.”
The Israeli army did not provide a new date for the complete withdrawal, Israel’s public broadcaster reported that Tel Aviv requested the international monitoring committee extend its troops’ presence by ten more days, this request has been rejected by Lebanon.
During the 82 day long ceasefire agreement, Israel has violated its terms approximately 923 times, leading to 73 deaths and 265 injuries, said official Lebanese data.
France have also spoken out against Israel’s actions in Lebanon, with Macron calling for Netanyahu to honour the ceasefire after 22 were killed by Israeli forces in Southern Lebanon on January 26th.
