Algeria has condemned a French ministers visit to the contested territory of Western Sahara as a “blatant disregard for international legality”.

According to Le Monde on 18 February, French Culture Minister Rachida Dati visited Western Sahara in what she called an “historic” trip, after France recognised Moroccan sovereignty over the disputed area.

The Algerian foreign ministry said the visit “reflects blatant disregard for international legality by a permanent member of the UN Security Council. This visit reinforces Morocco’s fait accompli in Western Sahara, a territory where the decolonization process remains incomplete and the right to self-determination unfulfilled.”
