UN demands a stop to wave of political “persecution” in Tunisia

The United Nations human rights chief has decried what he called the “persecution of political opponents” in Tunisia, demanding authorities to stop the recent surge in high profile arrests.
According to The New Arab on 19 February, a UN spokesperson said: “UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk calls on the Tunisian authorities to cease all forms of persecution of political opponents.”
Earlier in February, a Tunisian court handed long-time opposition leader Rached Ghannouchi, another length prison sentence to add to his year already in incarceration.
