The French senate on February 20th backed a bill to stop foreigners without the correct residency papers from getting married in France, reported RFI.

The plea for the legislation was taken to the senate by Stéphane Demilly with the backing of interior minister Bruno Retailleau and justice minister Gérald Darmanin.

“How is it possible to marry someone who is not legally resident in France?” Demilly asked the senate in his bid for the bill’s approval.
