Niger junta recommends five-year transition to democracy

Official state TV in Niger said on February 20th that a commission in the country’s ruling military junta has recommended a minimum five-year transition to democratic rule following discussions with national stakeholders, reported Reuters.
“The duration of the transition is set at 60 months, which may change depending on the security situation” among other factors, according to one of the commission’s vice presidents, Abdoulaye Seydou.
President of the commision Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey gave the same timeline and said political parties would be dissolved and a new charter would allow for two to five political parties.
