The UK has appointed a new ambassador to Morocco in an effort to maintain strong relations between the two countries.

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed that “Mr Alex Pinfield ,OBE ”, was appointed on February 20 to take the role of ambassador, with his duties set to begin in August 2025.

Alex Pinfield is a highly experienced British diplomat, having previously served as head of the department’s Iran unit and as deputy ambassador to Afghanistan.

He replaces Simon Martin, who has served as the UK’s ambassador to Morocco for nearly five years, having been appointed in February 2020.

The appointment of Alex Pinfield comes at a time where the UK and Morocco are seeking closer ties.

As previously reported by Maghrebi, the two countries are working on multiple energy projects, including the “xlinks project”, which aims to supply around “8%” of the UK’s electricity needs through Morocco.

The project is considered vital for UK energy security, making strong diplomatic relations with Morocco an important priority.

While the success of Alex Pinfields appointment remains to be seen, it appears that, at least for now, UK-Morocco relations are set to continue positively as both countries cooperate on future energy projects and economic development.
