Voting under way in German election

German voters are heading to the polls in the country’s February 23rd general election to elect a new parliament following a campaign focused on the economy and immigration, reported Sky News.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz lost a confidence vote in parliament in December 2024 which paved the way for this early election. Scholz had governed as the head of a fractious three-party coalition until its collapse last November after he sacked his finance minister.

Friedrich Merz, who lead the largest opposition party the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), has vowed to revive the economy and defend European interests in the face of a confrontational Trump-led White House. The far-right, anti-immigration Alternative for Germany is seeking gains but lacks partner party willing to go into government with it.
