Canary Islands President travels to Mauritania over migration

The President of Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, travelled to Mauritania for an official visit on Thursday 20th to address the issue of illegal migration, according to Atalayar on February 19th.
50 percent of the boats carrying illegal migrants heading for the Canary Islands leave for Mauritania. A spokesperson for the Canarian government, Alfonso Cabello, said that in January 2025 alone, up to 4,752 migrants arrived in the Canary Islands illegally.
Alfonso Cabello said the mission will ‘probably’ be ‘the most important ever’ with the African country and that it will take place 10 years after the last meeting.
