According to Greenpeace, European countries are extracting renewable energy from North African countries, particularly Egypt and Morocco, in order to “greenwash” their own economy and energy outputs.

The Guardian reports that this is forcing North Africans to import their fuel, all whilst feeling the environmental effects caused when extracting renewable energy.

Hanen Keskes, Greenpeace’s Middle East and North Africa campaigns lead, described the situation as: “The global north must take responsibility for reducing its own consumption and building domestic renewable capacity, instead of externalising socio-environmental costs to the global south. We must continue to fight to decolonise and transform the global financial architecture.”
