Officials in Sudan say the death toll from a military plane crash in Omdurman, a city on the outskirts of capital Khartoum, has risen to at least 46 people, reported Al Jazeera on February 26th.

The Antonov aircraft crashed on the evening of February 25th after taking off from the Wadi Seidna military airport in northern Omdurman, part of the greater Khartoum area.

The Khartoum Media Office on February 26th said 10 others were also injured in the crash. The health ministry gave the initial death toll of 19, in addition to saying that the aircraft crashed over a civilian house in the Karrari district in Omdurman.

Senior commander in Khartoum major-general Bahr Ahmed was reportedly killed in the crash.

Northern Omdurman residents reportedly heard a loud explosion from the crash, which caused damage to a number of homes and caused power outages in nearby neighbourhoods.

Sudan’s military, locked in a violent civil war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia since April 2023, put out a statement confirming that military personnel and civilians had been killed in the crash and stating that firefighting teams had been able to contain the blaze at the crash site.

No details on what had caused the crash were provided in the statement, but Reuters news agency was told by military sources that it was most likely due to technical reasons.
