The French Prime Minister will chair an emergency meeting on 26 February following the deadly knife attack which reignited debate over immigration policies.

According to Politico, French President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack in the Alsatian city of Mulhouse as an act of Islamic terrorism, stirring right wing voices amid Europe’s increasing conservatism.

The alleged perpetrator was a 37-year-old Algerian citizen, with French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau saying the the suspect had a “schizophrenic profile” and had previously been expelled from France.

The Prime Minister Francious Bayrou said: “The Mulhouse assassin had been presented 10 times to the Algerian authorities so that his country of origin would accept that we send him back home. It’s unacceptable.”
