Israeli forces have conducted a significant siege operation in the West Bank city of Jenin, resulting in the destruction of 120 buildings, as part of a broader campaign that marks the first deployment of tanks since the second Intifada in 2002, The New Arab reported on February 24th.

This escalation has not only led to the destruction of houses but also to city infrastructure, including roads.

On February 23rd, a platoon of tanks entered Jenin, advancing from the western entrance to the heart of Jenin camp. This operation, led by soldiers from the 188th Armoured Brigade, represents the first tank deployment to the occupied Palestinian territory in over two decades. This military activity is part of “Operation Iron Wall,” an offensive that began on January 21st which has already displaced thousands.

The scope of the military action extends beyond Jenin. Israeli forces, including units from the Nahal Infantry Brigade and the Duvdevan Commando Unit, have also targeted surrounding villages. Additional raids have been carried out in Tulkarm, as well as the Shuafat refugee camp in occupied East Jerusalem.

The consequences of these military activities are severe, with 40,000 Palestinians having been displaced from Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nour Shams refugee camps alone.

Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has said that he has told the military to maintain their presence in the camps “for the coming year” and stressed that they should not let residents come back. Katz also said that he told the military to stop the potential resurgence of hostilities.

The intense military operations have raised an alarm, with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres expressing grave concern over the increasing violence.
