Algeria has reiterated its support for the Gaza ceasefire agreement and reaffirmed its unwavering support for the Sahrawi people’s right to self-determination and to end the occupation of their territories.

Reported by AL24 News, a government-friendly Algerian news channel, the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lounès Magramane, made this statement in a speech at the High-Level Segment of the 58th Human Rights Council session.

Magramane, said the session is taking place within, “a complex and challenging climate that requires us to reactivate and reform international multilateral action mechanisms, free from any politicization, selectivity or double standards.”

He affirmed “Algeria’s deep concern regarding the ongoing worsening of the humanitarian situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, resulting from the genocidal war conducted by the barbaric Zionist occupation since October 2023, and the severe humanitarian crisis it has caused, whose consequences persist despite international mediation efforts that have led to a ceasefire agreement.”

Overall, his speech emphasised Algeria’s commitment to the protection of human rights and respect for international law, considering it necessary to uphold these values at the international level.

Regarding the Gaza ceasefire, the minister expressed its “categorical rejection of deportation plans aimed at emptying Gaza of its indigenous inhabitants, as part of a broader plan to undermine the Palestinian national project.”

Magramane then extended the statement to include the occupied Western Sahara, condemning “the systematic violations of human rights and international humanitarian law in the territory of Western Sahara by the Moroccan occupation.”

Despite the statement emphasising Algeria’s commitment to human rights principles, Human Rights Watch have reported that Algerian authorities continue to repress freedoms of expressions, the press, association, assembly, and movement.

Additionally, Maghrebi has also reported on the dozens of arrests taking place in Algeria after people took to social media to criticise the Algerian government. Users were using the viral hashtag #Manich_Radhi, meaning “I am not happy, satisfied.”

However, it appears there is consensus amongst Middle Eastern States to promote adherence to the Gaza ceasefire and opposition to the proposed deportation plans emanating from Trump’s America.

However, Algeria’s support for the self-determination rights of the Sahrawi people in Western Sahara appears to be a lone voice.
