The Moroccan king has begged Moroccans to abstain from slaughtering sheep during the festival of Eid al-Adha in June, following a dramatic drop in herd numbers brought on by years of chronic drought.

According to Reuters on 26 February, King Mohammad VI  warned that performing the rite will “cause significant harm to large segments of our people, especially those with limited income.”

Eid al-Adha celebrates the willingness of Abraham to sacrifice his son on God’s command and meat from the slaughtering of sheep and goats is shared among the family and donated to the poor.
