The trial of prominent Tunisian opposition leaders accused of conspiring against the state was postponed on March 4th until April 11th by the judge, who refused to release those held in custody, reported Reuters.

Opposition in Tunisia say the charges are fabricated and prove the authoritarian nature of Kais Saied’s rule. There were protests at the courthouse on March 4th to support the accused.

Forty people are being prosecuted in the case, including over 20 who have fled the country. Individuals include Ghazi Chaouachi, Issam Chebbi, Jawahar Ben Mbrak, Abdelhamid Jlassi and Khyam Turki. Former presidential chief of staff, Nadia Akacha, and former head of intelligence, Kamel Guizani, both of whom are abroad, are also among the accused.
