Mali suspends gold mining for foreign companies after accidents

Mali announced it will be suspending licenses for foreign companies mining artisanal gold on March 5th, due to a series of accidents in the mines.
According to AfricaNews, the most recent accidents were in January in the Koulikoro region, south of the country, and again in February in the Kayes region, which is southwest.
Artisanal gold-mining in the region produces around 30 tonnes of gold a year, 6% of Mali’s overall gold production.
