The UAE has funded a new field hospital to treat vulnerable communities as the political and environmental situation in South Sudan worsens.

According to The National on March 9th, the UAE has funded and built the 100-bed Madhol Field Hospital in the Northern Bahr el Ghazal state of South Sudan.

The hospital will provide support to the most vulnerable in the region, offering urgent health care and treatment.

South Sudan has faced huge health challenges, including the spread of malaria caused by the fact that the country has insufficient medical services and a deficit of access to proper medication.

As the hospital opened, a spokesperson said that: “Since its founding, humanitarian aid and the protection of civilians, particularly the sick, children, the elderly, and women, have served as the foundation of the UAE’s policy.”

The hospital is the third built by the UAE, as they continue to provide medical services to Sudanese refugees in neighbouring countries.

The two previous hospitals were built in Amdjarass and Abeche in Chad.

Dr Humphrey Karamagi, Sudan’s World Health Organisation representative, expressed his gratitude to the UAE for the hospital, as well as “its leading humanitarian efforts in enhancing the healthcare sector in Africa, through several projects and initiatives.

The UAE has maintained its resolute position regarding crises and conflicts in the Sahel region.

South Sudan split from Sudan in 2011, ushering in seven years of civil war until a peace deal was brokered in 2018.

In recent months, fears over the democratic integrity of the country have been raised and the UN has claimed that time is running out for Sudan to organise elections, as reported by Maghrebi on February 28.

The UAE has monitored the situation closely and recently announced “an additional $200 million of aid during the High-Level Humanitarian Conference for the people of Sudan.”

The opening of the hospital has been declared a “historic day” and signifies the tightening of relations between the two nations.
