Moroccan parliamentarians proposed visa restrictions on European citizens entering Morocco based on a policy of reciprocity, reported HESPRESS on March 17th.

The suspected visa requirements for European citizens entering Morocco have sparked heated debate in the European media, with concerns over potential disruptions to travel and diplomatic relations.

The proposal, introduced by Khalid Satti and Loubna Alaoui from the National Union of Moroccan Workers in the House of Councillors, aims to establish a visa requirement for European travellers based on the principle that countries should apply the same rules to each other’s citizens. Thus, if European nations impose visa requirements on Moroccans, Morocco should similarly impose those visa restrictions.

In a formal question to Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita, the legislators argued that while several European countries generate significant revenue from visa fees imposed on Moroccans, their citizens are currently allowed to enter Morocco without a visa.

This has led to calls for Morocco to assert reciprocal visa policies in response to European restrictions.

While the move seeks to address perceived inequalities, its implementation could have adverse economic consequences, particularly for Morocco’s tourism sector, which heavily relies on European visitors.

In recent years, the Moroccan government has invested significantly in tourism infrastructure, enhanced air travel accessibility through partnerships with budget airlines, and strengthened promotional efforts to attract more visitors, according to HESPRESS.

However, the proposal has reignited memories of the ‘visa crisis’ with France in 2022, when Moroccans faced significant obstacles in obtaining Schengen visas.

The situation led to public protests outside the EU embassy in Rabat, organised by Moroccan human rights groups, condemning the systemic rejection of visa applications and the high fees imposed by intermediary agencies.

While some argue that Morocco must implement reciprocal visa policies to address these challenges, others believe that an integrated tourism strategy—one that balances local development with strong ties to European markets—would be more effective.

Stakeholders in the tourism industry and diplomatic circles are closely monitoring Morocco’s decision on visa reciprocity or whether economic interests by maintaining visa-free access for European visitors will be deemed of more importance.

In implementing visa restrictions, it could ultimately strain Morocco-European relations and disrupt the free flow of travellers, potentially impacting both tourism and broader diplomatic ties.
