Morocco has been selected to host the 6th Global Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour in 2026.

According to Morocco World News on March 20th, Morocco was unanimously selected to host by the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO).

This marks the first time an Arab country has hosted the conference.

The conference will take place during the second quarter of 2026, and will focus on global actions needed to completely eliminate child labour.

During the conference, the implementation of recommendations from the Second World Summit for Social development will be evaluated. This summit is set to take place in Doha in November 2025,  and will focus particularly upon the root causes of child labour.

Any progress made since the last meeting of the conference in May 2022 will also be discussed at length. Peer learning, cooperation, and information exchange  will be promoted among all participating countries.

As well as this, the event explore the connections between the elimination of child labour and fundamental labour rights, aiming to introduce new commitments under the Global Coalition for Social Justice.

UNICEF estimates that more than 1 in 5 children from the world’s poorest countries are engaged in dangerous work as of 2023.

Child labour is especially common and more dangerous in areas affected by war and conflict. Sub-Saharan Africa currently has the highest number of child labourers in the world, with around 24% of children aged 5 to 17 involved in paid work.
