On March 19th, government officials met with the commander of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) in Hasakah, the northeastern province, to discuss  the merging of the SDF with the Syrian army.

According to Asharq Al-Awsat, the new Syrian government aims to bring the country’s Kurdish militias back under its control, but details of the agreement are still being finalised.

The SDF, a Kurdish-led group backed by the US, has been a key player in the region.

Negotiators will face the challenge of overcoming a decade of civil war and regional tensions.

This meeting follows a deal signed by Syria’s interim government with the Kurdish-led authority in the northeast just a week prior.

The agreement includes a ceasefire and plans on merging the SDF with the Syrian army by the end of the year.

The deal aims to bring the borders of northeast Syria and its lucrative oil fields under the control of the central government.
