French film star Depardieu begins trial on sexual assault charges

French film star Gérard Depardieu, famous both inside and outside of France and the highest-profile figure in French cinema to face allegations of sexual assault following the #MeToo movement, goes on trial on March 24th in Paris.

Depardieu, whose trial was delayed, is charged with the alleged sexual assault of two women on the set of a movie filmed in 2021, reports RFI.

The two women, whose names have not been made public, worked with Depardieu on the film Les volets verts. Depardieu has denied the charges, and his lawyer stated he would provide “witnesses and evidence that will show he has simply been targeted by false accusations”.
