Libya: UN alarmed at wave of arbitrary arrests

The United Nations Support Mission in Libya has said it is alarmed by the wave of arbitrary arrest and detentions in Libya, with individuals targeted for their political affiliations.
Legal professionals and members of the judiciary have also been targeted by security forces which has undermined judicial independence as trials continue marred with irregularities and lack of due process.
The statement comes amid Libyan authorities granting UNSMIL partial access to detention facilities but the use of arbitrary detention only serves to shrink civic space and create an atmosphere of fear.
