Turkish authorities detain over 1000 people in latest protests

Turkish authorities have detained over 1000 people over five days of anti-government protests following the arrest of President Erdogan’s main political rival.
Despite banning public protests, the government’s crackdown on political opposition has sparked widespread revolt with Al Jazeera reporting on Monday 24th that the arrests had not dimmed the opposition’s resolve.
The Turkish government has denied the arrest of Imamoglu was politically motivated, insisting the courts are independent but the arrest of the leader of the main opposition and the shrinking of civic space brings Turkey’s claims to be a democracy into question.
