Italy backs Syria’s transition with €68M package

Italy has committed €68 million ($73.2 million) in aid to Syria, Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani announced on March 27th. The package targets healthcare, infrastructure, and food security for the transitioning government.
According to Arab News, the aid comes as European nations cautiously engage with Syria following Hayat Tahrir al-Sham’s ousting of Assad in December 2024.
Earlier this month, the EU pledged €5.8 billion in collective support and eased sanctions on banking, energy, and transport sectors.
While the new Al-Sharaa government has secured an agreement with Druze minorities in the south, attacks on Alawites in the northwest have resulted in over 1,000 deaths, complicating international support efforts. Italy plans to launch new cooperation projects in the coming weeks and organize a business forum focused on reconstruction.
