Turkey: Mayor of Istanbul arrested on corruption charges

The Mayor of Istanbul has been arrested as part of a corruption investigation after a large group of security forces surrounded his home before taking him into custody.
The National reported on March 19th that the Turkish authorities have initiated a crackdown on corruption with over 100 other suspects, including journalists and businessmen, subject to the same charges.
The Mayor, Ekrem Imamoglu, is also President Erdogan’s main political rival and was set to be nominated as his party’s candidate for the next Turkish election.
