Libya: EU delegation welcomes the release of detainees

The EU Delegation to Libya has welcomed the release of a group of detainees.
According to The Libya Observer on March 30th, the detainees were released by judicial authorities.
In a statement, the delegation expressed their concern over the repeated reports of arbitrary disappearances and detention in Libya, this includes the disappearance of Mohamed El-Gamaty, brother of activist Hossam El-Gamaty.
Libyan authorities have been called on to immediately investigate these cases and to take the necessary steps to ensure the release of the disappeared and their safe return home.
This European position echoes the stance of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, who have highlighted the need to end arbitrary detention and disappearances, ensuring respect for human rights adhering to international standards.
In addition, Head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Menfi, announced an initiative on March 28th that led to the release of Hassan Jaballah Al-Farjani, a member of the House of Representatives, after serving over a year of his detention in Mitiga Prison in Tripoli.
This is not the first time Libya has been criticized for its human rights record, in January the government implemented a crackdown on a number of civic freedoms, particularly targeting non-governmental organizations.
