Ugandan activist and journalist, Agather Atuhaire, who was arrested in Tanzania for attending a treason trial for an opposition leader, has been released. Her Kenyan fellow, campaigner against police brutality Boniface Mwangi, was arrested alongside her earlier this week, according to Reuters.

Atuhaire, who has been in custody since May 17th, was found abandoned at the border of Tanzania and Uganda, with indications of torture, according to Reuters. Mwangi told the local newspaper Daily Nation: “We were both treated worse than dogs, chained, blindfolded and underwent a very gruesome torture”.

Officials from Tanzania have not commented on Atuhaire and Mwangi specifically, but Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan advised against foreign campaigners from “invading and interfering in our affairs” on May 17th.
