Syria backs Morocco’s Western Sahara plan

In a blow to Sharawi’s independence, Syria has chosen to shut the Polisario Front office in Damascus and support Morocco’s Western Sahara plan.

According to Moroccan government-friendly Atalayar, the move to shut the Damascus headquarters occurred during a visit by a Moroccan technical delegation to Damascus as they look to reopen the embassy of the Kingdom of Morocco in the Syrian capital.

During the meeting, numerous Syrian authorities gave their respect for Moroccan sovereignty, in turn rejecting the independence movements such as those defended by the Polisario Front.

This move sees the Syrian government clearly looking to engage in an alliance with the Moroccan Kingdom as the new interim government looks to satisfy both its country and its allies.

This is another big development for Morocco and its autonomy plan in the Western Sahara, which it currently holds a majority control of, as the Polisario Front and Algeria dispute their control.

On the 27th of May, Kenya gave its support to the Moroccan autonomy plan alongside support from big powers such as France, giving Morocco heavy legitimacy in the region.

The Western Sahara dispute, ongoing since the end of Spanish colonial rule in 1975, has been a long-standing geopolitical challenge. Morocco’s autonomy plan has gained significant traction internationally, with countries like the United States, France, and now Syria supporting Morocco in the Western Sahara.

This diplomatic shift reflects the growing recognition of Morocco’s strategic initiatives in the region.
