Syria: Ex-officials expose torture detainees faced under Assad

Many ex-officials from Syria have spoken out about the normalisation of torture in Syrian prisons under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad, the BBC reported on June 10th.
One man, referred to by the BBC as “Hussam” of the military police in Saydnaya prison, discussed how detention centre workers were instructed to carry out abuse. Hussam said: “Our superiors would say torture them, don’t let them sleep at night, throw them a party. Put them in a grave if you want to, bury them alive if you want to.”
According to Syrian human rights groups, roughly 100,000 individuals disappeared under the tenure of Assad, who ruled Syria for 24 years.
