Lebanese lawmaker urges nation to join NATO, sparking criticism

A Lebanese Member of Parliament (MP) and lawmaker has urged Lebanon to join NATO, prompting a reaction of condemnation and mockery from the public, The New Arab reported on June 16th.
The MP, Walid Al-Baarini, who is also a National Moderation Bloc member, said his suggestion was driven by a commitment to wanting to safeguard his country. Al-Baarini said his proposal was a reaction to what he defined as an atmosphere of deceit within the region which has now “collapsed.”
But social media users found the notion of Lebanon, as a small and politically-fragmented nation, entering NATO to be ridiculous.
