UN compares mass displacement in Gaza to Nakba catastrophe

UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees has compared the large-scale uprooting in Gaza to the Nakba catastrophe of 1948, when many Palestinians were subjected to ethnic cleansing during the formation of Israel, Middle East Eye reported on June 20th.
In an X post for World Refugee Day, the agency said: “77 years later, Palestinians continue to be forcibly displaced.” The agency’s statement emphasises the ongoing nature of the displacement of Palestinians, connecting the present catastrophe in Gaza to what Palestinians describe as a former “catastrophe”, when over 700,000 were displaced due to Zionist oppression.
The agency also said in the post, that since the beginning of the Gaza conflict, roughly 1.9 million have been displaced.
