US President Donald Trump announced a phased ceasefire intended to formally end the conflict between Israel and Iran which has gripped the region, as reported by Al-Monitor on June 24th.

Trump claimed the ceasefire would roll out over 24 hours, beginning with Iran halting attacks, followed by an Israeli stand-down 12 hours later. “It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE,” he posted on Truth Social, according to The Guardian on June 24th. He added that after 24 hours, the formal halt of the 12-day war would earn global praise, with both sides committing to “peaceful and respectful” conduct during the process, The Economist reported on June 24th.

The announcement came as international concern over the conflict’s escalation grew. Israel did not immediately confirm its participation in the ceasefire and explosions continued in Tehran overnight.

According to the BBC, Araghchi stated online that Iranian military operations continued “until the very last minute, at 4am.”

Missile fire between Iran and Israel followed Tel Aviv’s surprise airstrikes on Iranian nuclear and military sites on June 13th. Just hours before Trump announced the ceasefire, Iran launched missiles at the US Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar. Trump downplayed the strike as “very weak” and said Tehran had provided advance notice of the attack, according to The Guardian on June 24th.

Iran confirmed its retaliation matched the number of bombs dropped on its territory. The move seemed carefully measured to avoid escalation. Doha condemned Iran’s attack as “blatant aggression” despite Iran claiming it did not target Qatar directly.

Missiles crossed Doha’s skies as residents reported blasts. Crowds in Tehran celebrated. Iran’s health ministry said Israeli strikes had killed over 400, while Iranian attacks left 24 dead in Israel, NBC News reported on June 24th.
