FIFA sanctions Moroccan club ahead of the World Cup

FIFA has issued a hefty fine of $400,000 to Wydad Casablanca, a Moroccan football team, after their fans released smoke bombs during a match against the Italian team Juventus Turin. The latter won 4-1, according to Maghreb Actu on June 27.
Red smoke filled the stadium following Wydad’s first goal, scored by South African player Thembinkosi Lorch. According to FIFA, the display of enthusiasm violated their safety rules warranted hefty sanctions on the Moroccan club.
The $400,000 will be deducted from the $9.55 million endowment planned for African participants– a heavy blow to Wydad, which was banking on this competition to strengthen its financial situation.
