Women’s Africa Cup of Nations 2025: Algeria fail to reach semi-finals

Algeria lost out to Ghana (2-4) after missing two penalties in the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 on July 19th, as reported by Radio France Internationale. The semi-finals in Morocco will see Nigeria face South Africa, and Morocco face Ghana on July 22nd.
The Algerian women’s team have failed to reach the semi-finals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. The quarter-final between Algeria and Ghana saw no goals scored in the main game, but proved fatal for the Fennecs when they lost out on penalties, narrowly failing to qualify to the next round.
The Algerians saw their competition come to an end without conceding a single goal in the game. They had even held off the formidable Nigerian team on the third day of the group phase. Ghana’s Black Queens almost broke down the Algerian defence on the half-hour mark, but Stella Nyamekye’s effort was disallowed for being offside.
Still neck-and-neck at the end of normal time, the two teams stretched out the suspense until extra time, when they again failed to open the scoring. In the end, the Algerian team finally fell in the penalty shoot-out after missed attempts by Marine Dafeur and Inès Belloumou. Ghana, who missed out on the last edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, now reach the semi-finals for the first time since 2016, and will face hosts Morocco for a place in the final.
The competition was first established in 1998 as a qualification event, but became a biennial event in 2025. WAFCON has promoted women’s football across the continent, and continues to grow, with prize winnings doubling to USD 1,000,000 this year.
