Egypt turns down Israeli proposal, warns of Gaza escalation
Cairo strongly denies Israel’s proposal to relocate the Palestinians who are in Gaza to the south of the enclave, claiming that putting this into effect would prompt an intense escalation, according to the Middle East Monitor on July 24th.
Israel is looking to relocate Palestinians to Libya, Ethiopia, and Indonesia. What’s more, The head of Israel’s intelligence agency Mossad, David Barnea, visited the US to get support from the country for the plan to relocate Palestinians.
Osama Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s permanent representative to the UN, stated before the UN Security Council on July 23nd that Cairo fully rejects any attempt to forcibly displace Palestinians into Rafah. Israel intends to relocate up to 600,000 Palestinians, in Rafah, where Israel aims to make a “humanitarian city.”
Furthermore, a Gaza redeployment plan from Israel pushes Egypt on the edge for its national security.
Abdel Khalek asserted that Egypt is urging for the complete implementation of Security Council resolutions, particularly Resolution 2735, stating that these obligations must not be ignored.
He further demanded that the Council propose resolutions that demand Israel to stop its war on Gaza and end its blockade affecting Palestinians. He then emphasised that such a decision would help support ongoing talks and contribute to a ceasefire. Cairo is also calling for action to remove Israel’s siege on Gaza.
Abdel Khalek criticised Israel’s actions, which he referred to as the intentional starvation of civilians aimed at the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. He urged for the UN and its humanitarian partners to be granted to work freely, emphasising the world’s rejection of Israel’s “Gaza Humanitarian organisation.”
He further characterised the current model as a breach of international law and several humanitarian values, adding that the model has become a trap to kill civilians. “Let us be honest, this is not a humanitarian mechanism. It is a tool for humiliating human dignity, starvation, and killing,” said Abdel Khalek.
Abdel Khalek urged the Security Council and foreign nations to take full responsibility for the conditions in Gaza. He further called for immediate action in Gaza, demanding efforts to halt the escalation and to safeguard Palestinians.
