Iraq: Hundreds demonstrate over water shortages amid drought

Hundreds of people in Iraq took to the streets on July 25th over extreme water shortages which have worsened due to hot weather in the country’s Babylon province, according to The New Arab via AFP.
Iraq’s population of 46 million have been severely affected by climate change, as temperatures have increased, drought has continued and river flows have decreased.
Near the city of Hilla, in al-Majriyeh village, over 300 demonstrators called on the government to address the ongoing water problem. Saadoun al-Shammari, a 66-year-old demonstrator, said: “We have been without water for 35 days and it has already been scarce for years.”
