Lebanon: Man sentenced to death in absentia due to UNIFIL killing

A man has been sentenced to death in absentia by a Lebanese court over the killing of a United Nations peacekeeper which took place when a UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) convoy was attacked in 2022, according to The New Arab via AFP.

Private Sean Rooney was killed while three other people suffered wounds when the convoy was attacked in Lebanon on December 14th 2022.

A judicial official declared the death sentence on July 29th and said the ruling was made at roughly midnight on July 28th. The main defendant, Mohammad Ayyad, was sentenced to death.
