The African Union announced that it would not recognise a “so-called parallel government” in Sudan, and advised that all member states follow suit, according to AFP via TRT Global on July 30th.

The paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, who have been at war with the Sudanese military since April 2023 after a power struggle turned violent, established a parallel government on July 28th to rival the internationally recognised military-backed administration.

In a statement, the AU’s Peace and Security Council “called on all AU Member States and the international community to reject the fragmentation of Sudan and not recognise the so-called ‘parallel government’ which has serious consequences on the peace efforts and the existential future of the country.”
